What is a rotary UPS?

A rotary UPS is an uninterruptible power supply system in which energy is stored kinetically in a rotating flywheel. When a failure occurs in the main power supply circuit, the flywheel instantly releases the stored energy and ensures smooth power supply to the connected equipment without any interruption. Rotary UPS are often integrated with diesel generators: the flywheel covers the outage period until the generator starts and takes over the load. Such a system is ideal for data centers, hospitals, industrial facilities and other critical facilities.

How to choose a rotary UPS?

When choosing a rotary UPS, consider the following factors: Power – Rotary UPSs are typically rated for loads from 100 kVA to several MVA; accurately calculate the power needs of your facility. Runtime – Determine how long the power outage protection needs to last until the diesel generator starts (typically 10-30 seconds). Generator integration – Make sure the system is compatible with your generator type and automatic transfer mechanism. Maintenance – Rotary UPSs require periodic maintenance, but much less frequently than battery-based solutions. Environmental conditions – Check that the system is suitable for the intended installation location.

Rotary UPS application areas

Rotary UPSs, due to their reliability and high power capabilities, are widely used: In data centers - they protect server infrastructure from any power outages. In hospitals and medical centers - they ensure the continuous operation of vital equipment. In industrial plants - they protect production lines and automated systems from electrical disturbances. In airports and transport infrastructure - they guarantee the operation of critical infrastructure facilities. In financial institutions - they protect data centers and trading systems from losses due to electrical disturbances.

Advantages of rotary UPS

Rotary UPSs have several important advantages over traditional systems: Long service life – the flywheel can operate for 20 years or more without replacement, unlike batteries that need to be replaced every 3-5 years. High efficiency – rotary UPSs achieve 96–98% efficiency, significantly reducing energy consumption. Minimal environmental impact – no need to dispose of chemical batteries. Temperature resistance – operates in a wide temperature range without loss of efficiency. Instantaneous response – power transfer occurs without any interruption, protecting the most sensitive equipment.
