Hygrometer Buying Guide
Hygrometers are devices designed to measure the relative and absolute humidity of air or gases. They are widely used in industry, agriculture, food and pharmaceutical sectors, HVAC systems and laboratories. Hygrometers work according to different principles: capacitive sensors measure electrical capacitance, resistive sensors measure electrical resistance, and the mirror point method provides the highest accuracy.
Choosing the right hygrometer depends on the measurement range, accuracy requirements, environmental conditions and application. This guide will help you choose the most suitable humidity measuring device for your needs.
What is a hygrometer?
A hygrometer is a measuring instrument used to determine the relative humidity (RH) or absolute humidity of the air. Relative humidity is expressed as a percentage and indicates how much water vapor is in the air compared to the maximum amount that the air can absorb at the same temperature. Modern capacitive sensors perform measurements quickly and accurately over the entire range of 0–100 % RH.
Hygrometers are used in meteorology, food processing, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, warehouses, and HVAC systems. Accurate humidity measurement helps prevent condensation, mold growth, corrosion, and ensure product quality and safety.
Types and applications of hygrometers
- Capacitive hygrometers: the most commonly used type, measures relative humidity in the range of 0-100 % RH, fast, accurate and suitable for many applications.
- Resistive hygrometers: used for low humidity measurement, durable and vibration resistant in industrial environments.
- Mirror point hygrometers: highest accuracy, used in laboratories and for reference measurement – measures dew point.
- Thermal conductivity hygrometers: for measuring very low humidity (ppm level) in industrial gases.
- Psychrometers (dry/wet bulb): the classic method used in meteorology requires constant maintenance.
Frequently asked questions about hygrometers
Frequently asked questions about the selection, installation and use of hygrometers.
What is the difference between relative and absolute humidity?
Relative humidity (RH) indicates the amount of water vapor in the air as a percentage of the maximum amount possible at that temperature. Absolute humidity indicates the actual amount of water vapor per unit volume of air.
How often should a hygrometer be calibrated?
Industrial hygrometers are typically calibrated once a year or according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Laboratory instruments may require more frequent calibration.
Can a hygrometer be used outdoors?
Yes, but you need to choose a device with an appropriate degree of protection (IP65 and above), resistant to temperature fluctuations and UV rays.
What factors determine the accuracy of a hygrometer?
Accuracy is determined by sensor quality, temperature compensation, calibration frequency, and environmental factors – air movement, pollution levels, and condensation on the sensor.
