The sensor emits a focused signal that is reflected from the surface of the material and returns as an echo signal to the device, where it is processed and converted into a level value. This category includes both free-beam radars and guidance radars, also known as TDR or GWR sensors.

The fundamental difference between these technologies lies in the signal transmission. Free-beam radars use antennas that send waves in a non-contact manner towards the material, while guided radars transmit the signal through a probe – a rod or cable – that is in direct contact with the material.

Free-radiating radars are usually described by operating frequency, as it is this that determines accurate and reliable level measurement in various containers.

High-frequency technology allows for more compact sensors, narrower beam angles, and better reflection properties. For these reasons, UWT radar sensors works with modern 80 GHz technology, which guarantees extremely precise results.

Directional radars, on the other hand, can operate at a much lower frequency, around 1 GHz. This technology is particularly useful when the environment contains dust, sediment, foam, vapors or when the measured surface is unstable. In addition, these sensors are also suitable for determining phase boundaries (interfaces).
