Repair of VACON frequency converters and static converters on board AMPERE in Riga

Ship electrical systems are complex and require regular maintenance and professional repairs. It is particularly important to ensure that propulsion systems and auxiliary electrical equipment to operate reliably, as their failures can stop the ship's operation. Our team has carried out detailed VACON frequency converters and static converters repair and maintenance work on a passenger ship AMPERE, standing Rygoje. Šis projektas pareikalavo ne tik techninių žinių, bet ir kruopštaus problemų sprendimo laive esančiomis sąlygomis.

Job tasks and challenges

We were approached about three main problems:

  1. SB Propulsion System – Checking the Vacon 20A1 frequency converter after the electric motor burned out. It was necessary to determine the cause of the failure and restore operation.

  2. PS Propulsion System – resetting the internal cooling pump of the Vacon 22A1 inverter using a data cable.

  3. Static Converter no. 1 (AC500V/60Hz → AC400V/50Hz) – automatic synchronization problem with Static Converter No. 2. Manual mode worked, but automatic mode only worked in one combination.

Such failures can affect the ship's maneuverability, cooling systems, and power supply, so their elimination was critically important.

Work completed

Our team consistently performed the following actions:

  • Diagnostics of a faulty motor frequency converter – we read all parameters, checked the history of error codes, and performed an analysis of the CLOSED LOOP function being disabled.

  • Mechanical maintenance of the device – we removed and cleaned the covers, blew out the entire device with compressed air, and reassembled it after cleaning.

  • Testing of electronic components – we checked the output cascade transistors with a multimeter, and measured the output voltage.

  • Checking the parameters of static converters – we made sure that the settings are correct, there are no errors, but the output relay module may be faulty.

  • Loading new parameters – We loaded the adjusted parameter file into the PS Propulsion System pump converter and set the appropriate application.

  • Tank room frequency converter check – the device is operating without errors, the parameters have been copied and added to the service documentation.

Results and recommendations provided to the client

After the work was completed, all systems, except for a possible failure of the Static Converter No. 1 output relay, are operating properly.

Our main recommendations:

  • Immediately replace the ASIC fan in the SB Propulsion System converter.

  • Perform external and internal cleaning of the converters annually.

  • Keep a set of spare main and internal fans on board for quick replacement.
